primary age kids

Primary kids sure are unique
They can be wild but tame, too
They've had a few years practice
Of being told just what to do

They become more of themselves
By connecting the world around
And take on other's feelings
Like when their best friend wears a frown

They start to face challenges
And compare others to themselves
They still believe in Santa
And the hard work of all the elves

The Tooth Fairy is a constant
Gracing their sweet pillows at night
Parents perform their best work
Trying to remain out of sight

They're still tight with mom and dad
And oftentimes, their siblings too
But if those siblings touch their things?
Then they will tantrum like they're two

When they open their lunch bag
And spot what has been packed with care
If they don't like what they see
They whine like life’s cruel and unfair

They can help with simple chores
With some complaints about a wage
Want an uninformed opinion?
Then you have come to the right age

If there is a crinkle sound
Junk food wrappers are what they hear
They’ll ninja to the kitchen
Just when you thought the coast was clear

They start becoming clever
By picking up on social signs
And might announce to the world
Mom’s having another glass of wine

Assume you are in public
And say something not quite right
Primary kids are sure to
Set the record to your delight

Adults begin to realize
That grade school math is kinda hard
And those pronouns and adverbs
Are sure to catch parents off guard

Gone are the days when grown-ups
Could spell aloud the things to hide
'Cause the bright primary kid
Will figure out the joke's offside

They love to chitter-chatter
Reporting every last detail
The mention of a ‘bathroom word’
Means a giggle-fest will soon entail

They remember everything
A promise never goes unkept
They sure test their boundaries
Which is not easy to accept

As a parent, I enjoy
Primary child milestones
Still glimpses of them as ‘Littles’
Coupled with big kid undertones

Taking in this age is great
An innocence still fills their days
And parents have the pleasure of
Continuing to be amazed
