first and last
I was the first to feel your toes
Gently kick me as you twirled
Giggling, I’d trace the bumps
You were mama's precious pearl
Upon your grand arrival
I was the first to cry for you
The first to whisper in your ear
With a warm welcome to our crew
I was the first to understand
Your little personality
First to explain your jumbled words
When they did not come out clearly
I am the first one that you run to
When you have exciting news
And the arms you look to embrace
When you endure a bump or bruise
I am the first to realize
When something’s not quite right
A funny vibe or an odd look
Mom can sense when to take flight
And although I am the last
To get some sleep when you feel ill
I still prefer that I’m the one
To help you take that yucky pill
Being last to eat a meal
Means mama's plate is often cold
It’s ok, my food will steam
Much, much later when I am old
I am the last to steal your kiss
When you are running out the door
And the last to say the words
Mama will always love you more
I’m the last face that you see
As your eyes close before you dream
And the last person you argue with
When you need to blow off steam
Although I’m also last
To hear ‘please and thanks’ and ‘I’m sorry’
Calling you my baby
Is mama’s favourite story
